HRD Case 2

Promoting interdepartmental collaborations through training for management to lead to increased corporate value.
Company B: major food manufacturer
with approximately 2000 employees

Company B has been pioneering the food manufacturing industry and contributing to food culture. They were making earnest efforts to improve corporate value, and were focusing especially on interdepartmental collaborations. Company B let Human Link know that they wanted HR support for a management challenge to strengthen interdepartmental collaboration. Human Link supported Company B in doing this from the planning stages to implementing training programs.

Challenges

  • The strengths of each department, ranging from developing materials to recycling technology, were further enhanced.
  • There was a need for flexible collaboration between departments in order to respond to needs of the diversifying market.

Solutions

Holding workshops for department managers to enhance interdepartmental collaboration.

Human Link conducted two days of training aiming to change the consciousness of department managers and to improve interdepartmental communication channels. On the first day of training, Human Link conducted a 360-degree feedback survey in which observations were made by managers, colleagues, and subordinates about their respective views on the existing challenges that the company faces. Then, a round-table discussion was conducted in order to improve active communication within the company, where department managers identified challenges and issues. Human Link conducted a program in which participants write their requests and ideas for improvement on a "Request Sheet," and the department managers who receive these requests make adjustments on the spot to reflect the opinions of other departments to create his/her own department's action plan.

Effects

Company B organized challenges its departments were facing through workshops for an in-depth look into the process of formulating action plans. This became a foothold for detailed progress for items that required interdepartmental collaboration.

Through the workshop, mutual understanding between departments was achieved, and interdepartmental collaboration was promoted, led proactively by each department head. Human Link received comments from Company B stating that its interdepartmental collaboration had become easier to accomplish. Company B was extremely satisfied at the way organizational barriers were overcome, and that they were able to formulate an action plan. Human Link continues to provide them support in HR training.
